Center promises a hot summer of LGBT fun

by Tim Marshall

It all starts at the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center this summer. The organization is once again offering a summer full of programs and

events.

New group for people in their 20s

A group of friends in their twenties have formed 20s Together, a new group open to all LGBT people ages 20-29. The group will meet the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 7-9 p.m. at the Cleveland Lesbian-Gay Center, 6600 Detroit Ave.

The hosts of 20s Together, Michael Hess, Katie Kroner and Erin Corwin, intend the group to build community among people in their twenties, and to offer thoughtful conversation, social outings and the opportunity to make new friends to all who join. All members of 20s Together will have a hand in running this self-directed group.

Members are encouraged to bring their ideas for the types of programs and events (trips, concerts, coffeehouse nights, etc.) they would like to see offered in the future.

Men: Use and choose safely

A free harm-reduction workshop for gay and bisexual men, set for Thursday, July 17 at 7 p.m. at the Center, will show participants how to reduce risks when combining alcohol, drugs and sex.

According to executive director David Smith, "Harm reduction is taught all over the world, but not very often here in the United States. Different from 'abstinence only,' this model shows men who use drugs and alcohol and have sex how to do these things more safely."

Further, harm reduction meets people on their terms to address concerns with drug use and unsafe sex.

L. Donald McVinney, the national director of education and training at the Harm Reduction Coalition in New York City, will lead the workshop. McVinney will also hold a harm reduction seminar in July for health care professionals who work with gay and bisexual men.

These programs are funded by the AIDS Funding Collaborative.

Chick Flicks return in July

Although Chick Flicks, the center's popular women's movie night, is taking the month of June off to celebrate Pride, the event will return on Saturday, July 19 and Saturday, August 16.

Each installment is the chance to meet other lesbians and bisexual women and en-

joy a rotating schedule of musical guests or other entertainment, and a choice of three women-themed movies.

Social hour begins at 6:30p.m., with snacks and beverages provided, and the films start at 7:30 p.m. There's always plenty of popcornto go around the showings, which have included Bound, But I'm a Cheerleader, Gia, and Treading Water. Past musical performers have included local singer/songwriter Mary Miller and the popular Cleveland Celtic folk band the Oh!Sullivans.

Send your suggestions of films to flicks@lgcsc.org.

lesbians and gay men.

The U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing a case, Lawrence v. Texas, which challenges that law, and is expected to issue a ruling by the end of June.

In addition to Texas, three states-Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma-still have consensual sodomy laws that apply only to gay people.

Nine other states-Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Utah— and Puerto Rico still have consensual sodomy laws that apply to straight and gay adults, but are invoked almost exclusively against lesbians and gay men.

Potential consequences of the court's decision could be sweeping, affecting how the court scrutinizes laws that treat people differently according to sexual orientation and outright legalizing sodomy in every state once and for all. Opponents to sodomy laws are cautiously optimistic that the Texas law will be overturned. If so, it would be a major boost to the gay rights movement, and significantly improve public perception of the gay community.
